N COMPUTER applications we are used to live with approximation. Var I ious notions of approximation appear, in fact, in many circumstances. One notable example is the type of approximation that arises in numer ical analysis or in computational geometry from the fact that we cannot perform computations with arbitrary precision and we have to truncate the representation of real numbers. In other cases, we use to approximate com plex mathematical objects by simpler ones: for example, we sometimes represent non-linear functions by means of piecewise linear ones. The need to solve difficult optimization problems is another reason that forces us to deal with approximation. In particular, when a problem is computationally hard (i. e. , the only way we know to solve it is by making use of an algorithm that runs in exponential time), it may be practically unfeasible to try to compute the exact solution, because it might require months or years of machine time, even with the help of powerful parallel computers. In such cases, we may decide to restrict ourselves to compute a solution that, though not being an optimal one, nevertheless is close to the optimum and may be determined in polynomial time. We call this type of solution an approximate solution and the corresponding algorithm a polynomial-time approximation algorithm. Most combinatorial optimization problems of great practical relevance are, indeed, computationally intractable in the above sense. In formal terms, they are classified as Np-hard optimization problems.

Unfortunately all the methods developed, which certainly have a good physical foundation, are based on a large number of extreme sim plifications or uncontrolled assumptions. To date, the ever more stringent requirements for efficient production and use of energy and heat from com bustion chambers call for prediction algorithms of higher accuracy and more detailed radiative heat transfer calculations. The driving forces behind this are advanced technology requirements, the costs of large-scale experimen tal work, and the limitation of physical modeling. This interest is growing more acute and has increased the need for the publication of a textbook for more accurate treatment of radiative transfer in enclosures. The writing of a textbook on radiative heat transfer, however, in ad dition to working regularly on other subjects is a rather difficult task for which some years of meditation are necessary. The book must satisfy two requirements which are not easily reconciled. From the mathematical point of view, it must be written in accordance with standards of mathemati cal rigor and precision.

Aluminum P/M parts can be production sintered in various types of furnaces and atmospheres. Selection of sintering furnace depends upon economic considerations and production rates desired. Batch furnaces have lowest investment costs and are adequate for low to medium production whereas continuous furnaces are more costly but provide higher production rates. strong, well-sintered P/M parts can be obtained in atmos pheres of nitrogen, dissociated ammonia and in vacuum. Atmos phere selection depends upon facilities available within individual plants plus property requirements. Highest strengths are produced in nitrogen followed by vacuum and dissociated ammonia. This collection and her experience have made it possible for her to prepare these exercises in radiological diagnosis concerned exclusively with craniofacial tomodensitometry. The viewer will appreciate the choice of original docu ments of the highest quality, and also note the delicacy of execution of the diagrams, all drawn by the author herself. Marcelle Megret, like most of my students, conceives and carries out the schematas herself. The requirements concern ing certainty, strictness, precision, and objectivity would lead her to agree with Ludwig Wittgenstein's observations that since certain things cannot be said they must be shown, and that rules are insufficient when there are no examples. I should like this book to be successful. It inaugurates Marcelle Megret's career as an author and is an honor to the University of Geneva.
