The main purpose of this book is to serve as a university textbook for a first course in astronomy. However, we believe that the audience will also include many serious ama teurs, who often find the popular texts too trivial. The lack of a good handbook for am ateurs has become a problem lately, as more and more people are buying personal com puters and need exact, but comprehensible, mathematical formalism for their programs. The reader of this book is assumed to have only a standard high-school knowledge of mathematics and physics (as they are taught in Finland), everything more advanced is usually derived step by step from simple basic principles. The mathematical background needed includes plane trigonometry, basic differential and integral calculus, and (only in the chapter dealing with celestial mechanics) some vector calculus. Some mathematical concepts the reader may not be familiar with are briefly explained in the appendices or can be understood by studying the numerous exercises and examples. However, most of the book can be read with very little knowledge of mathematics, and even if the reader skips the mathematically more involved sections, (s)he should get a good overview of the field of astronomy. This book has evolved in the course of many years and through the work of several authors and editors. The first version consisted of lecture notes by one of the editors (Oja).
Berkeley's philosophy has been much studied and discussed over the years, and a growing number of scholars have come to the realization that scientific and mathematical writings are an essential part of his philosophical enterprise. The aim of this volume is to present Berkeley's two most important scientific texts in a form which meets contemporary standards of scholarship while rendering them accessible to the modern reader. Although editions of both are contained in the fourth volume of the Works, these lack adequate introductions and do not provide com plete and corrected texts. The present edition contains a complete and critically established text of both De Motu and The Analyst, in addi tion to a new translation of De Motu. The introductions and notes are designed to provide the background necessary for a full understanding of Berkeley's account of science and mathematics. Although these two texts are very different, they are united by a shared a concern with the work of Newton and Leibniz. Berkeley's De Motu deals extensively with Newton's Principia and Leibniz's Specimen Dynamicum, while The Analyst critiques both Leibnizian and Newto nian mathematics. Berkeley is commonly thought of as a successor to Locke or Malebranche, but as these works show he is also a successor to Newton and Leibniz.

With regard to the topic New Methods of Technology and their Appropriat eness for the UK Fast Moving Consumer Good (FMCG) Business , this work deals with the description of the current com mu ni ca tion strategy of FMCG manufacturers compared with new methods of communication. Since ad ver tisements of FMCGs appeal to a wide audience and are dependent on being transmitted frequently, FMCG manu facturers predominantly rely upon traditional mass media. Nowadays FMCGs are characterised as low-in volve ment products and are ex posed to higher com pe ti tion. In order to stay com petitive it is vital for FMCG manufacturers to arouse brand awareness thus ensuring the brand s perception by the con sumer. Since they are not in a position to recognise the consumers needs due to lack of appropriate measure ment, FMCG manufacturers need to become attentive to the new methods, which fulfil the today s requirements of target ing consumers effectively. In contrast to traditional media the new methods of technology offer good opportunities to satisfy the needs of the modern consumer by delivering cus tom ised advertisements. Due to the interactivity of ad vert ise ments, the new formats enable better brand awareness by adding value to the brand in form of entertainment and information.

The need for the study arose out of the lack of scientific validated data regarding the treatment of Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder (STSD)/com passion fatigue among emergency rescue workers as well as the need for a cost effective treatment plan that would address the serious need for emergency rescue workers in South Africa. The effects of STSD are often as debilitating as that of PTSD. It hampers the sufferer unable to operate as well as they previously did. As a result they may present with lower productivity at work as well as psycho-social problems. This research focuses on the development of a short term action centred clinical personological treatment programme for adult emergency rescue workers who developed STSD/ com passion fatigue and co-morbid symptoms of burnout as a result of exposure to critical incidents. The action centred personological treatment programme proved to be effective in the treatment of symptoms of STSD/compassion fatigue and burnout without significantly reducing the candidates' potential for compassion satisfaction. This study would be of interest to professionals in the fields of psychiatry , psychology and emergency rescue work.

Developing countries are increasingly faced with the lack of alternative insti tu tions to counter the social processes entrenched in local settings that lead to poverty. In this book, the author investigates the potentials of Church-based organizations (CBOs) as alternative mechanisms, and suggests a com mu nitarian approach to poverty eradication as a back up to the past and present approaches offered by modernism and post modernism respectively. Both the upcoming theory of Social Learning and the age-old principle of Participation are used as a theoretical framework, with empirical data from the diocese of Ogoja, Nigeria. The author investigates key research questions such as: How do churches learn to build on the capacity of individuals and groups as stakeholders that influence poverty eradication at the local level? How do Churches as organizations learn to become social change agents? This book enunciates a new dimension to the development discourse and the ongoing fight against poverty and it is highly recommended for scholars of international development in their effort to proffer a holistic solution to the problem of poverty and its eradication. The third approach to poverty according to the author is a communitarian approach that examines the organizational dynamics of a diocese in relation to the Social Justice Agenda of the Roman Catholic Church
